1971-72 was the end of the line in Los Angeles and the NHL for Eddie Joyal. He started the season with the Kings, playing 44 games before ending up with the Philadelphia Flyers to finish out the season. He was traded on January 28, 1972 with Bill Flett, Ross Lonsberry and Jean Potvin for Serge Bernier, Larry Brown, Bill Lesuk and Jim Johnson.

The fifth player selected by the Kings at the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft, 25th overall, Joyal was the first in franchise history to be awarded a penalty shot. No member of the Kings would get the chance again until February 13, 1972 when Butch Goring scored the first penalty shot goal in franchise history against those same Rangers. This time, it was Gilles Villemure in net. By this point, Joyal was no longer with the Kings, instead he was entering his third week with the Flyers.
