In Philadelphia’s third ever meeting with the New York Rangers, Doug Favell did get in a fight with Reg Fleming. On February 18, 1968, the Blue Shirts hosted the Flyers at Madison Square Garden with the home team winning 3-1. At 8:29 of the first period, both Favell and Fleming received minors for high-sticking and majors for fighting.

Despite the loss, the fight obviously fired up Doug. He made 42 saves on 45 shots in the game with Jim Neilson‘s seven leading the way for the Rangers. At the other end of the ice, Ed Giacomin had a relatively easy night, turning away all but one of just 18 shots. For Favell, it was a tumultuous rookie season, assessed 37 penalty minutes in 37 games.

As for Favell’s 10-0 loss in his first pro game, that happened in 1965-66 with the Oklahoma City Blazers of the CPHL. His first NHL game was on October 14, 1967 at the Long Beach Convention Center against the Los Angeles Kings. It was a loss but only by a score of 4-2 with the fourth goal by Brian Kilrea on an empty net. Doug made 34 saves on 37 shots in the game.

In his rookie 1967-68 NHL season, Favell put up a 2.27 goals against average with four shutouts over 37 games with Bernie Parent having nearly the same numbers. Doug was third in the voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year, just five votes behind Jacques Lemaire and with less than half of the votes of winner Derek Sanderson.

Between 1967-68 and 1978-79, Doug Favell appeared in 373 regular season and 21 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Colorado Rockies. Not a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Doug was inducted into the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2005.
