Details

This 1983-84 O-Pee-Chee hockey card contains an ERROR but only in the French info snippet. Don Edwards eclipsed the 20,000 minutes played mark in the previous season. This is misinterpreted in the French section as “minutes de punitions” – penalty minutes. As it turns out, Edwards was assessed a total of 42 penalty minutes over 459 regular season games in the NHL. He ended up with 26,181 regular season minutes played.

In 1979-80, Don had a 2.57 goals against average with two shutouts over 49 games for the Sabres. Bob Sauve had a 2.36 GAA with four blanks over 32 games. They were the first Buffalo duo to win the Vezina Trophy.

Edwards and Reggie Lemelin shared duties in the Calgary nets in 1983-84 with a young Mike Vernon cutting his teeth with a single game for the Flames. Vernon wouldn’t take off as the team’s number one goaltender until the 1986-87 NHL season.

Between 1976-77 and 1985-86, Don Edwards appeared in 459 regular season and 42 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Buffalo Sabres, Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs. Originally, he was a fifth round pick by the Sabres at the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft after playing two years of major junior with the Kitchener Rangers.
