Details

Derek Sanderson’s 24 goals in his 1967-68 rookie campaign indeed earned him Calder Trophy honours as National Hockey League rookie of the year. However, it wouldn’t get much better than that over his NHL career.

Sanderson topped out with a 29 goal performance for the Bruins in 1970-71. Not quite what fans envisioned after his 41 goals in 47 games for the Niagara Falls Flyers in his final season of major junior hockey.

For 1968-69, his goal scoring numbers did improve to 26. Three of those 26 came in a January 30, 1969 game against the Los Angeles Kings at the Forum, his first NHL hat trick. Derek scored his 14th, 15th and 16th goals of the season, including the game winner in the 7-5 Bruins victory.

His second and third goals of the game were scored just 34 seconds apart, in the first 48 seconds of the third period. Sanderson also assisted on a goal by Glen Sather for a four point game. All goals were scored on L.A. goalie Gerry Desjardins.

Between 1965-66 and 1977-78, Derek Sanderson played 598 regular season and 56 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Bruins, New York Rangers, Vancouver Canucks, St. Louis Blues and Pittsburgh Penguins. He was a two-time Stanley Cup champion with Boston.
