Card Notes
One of the best faceoff men in the National Hockey League and also one of the circuit’s top penalty killers. Derek is hoping to rebound to his best form with the Rangers after several outstanding seasons with the Boston Bruins. Injuries have hurt him the last two years, but he remains of the most exciting players in hockey. Controversial and mod, Derek is very adept at making things happen when he’s on the ice. He’s a good fighter.
Details
Coming into the 1974-75 NHL season, Derek had played just 54 regular season games with the Boston Bruins over the previous two campaigns. He did get on track with the New York Rangers, playing in 75 of the team’s 80 games while putting up good numbers with 25 goals and 25 assists for 50 points.
Against his former team, Derek was shutout in three of the four games he played against the Bruins in his first year with the Rangers. In his first visit back to the Boston Garden, his old teammates treated him to an 11-3 beatdown. New York managed just 16 shots on net, two off the stick of Sanderson. Phil Esposito was especially unkind with a seven point game and eleven shots on net.
His time in the Big Apple was brief. Eight games into the 1975-76 NHL season, he was dealt to the St. Louis Blues. In the eight games with New York, he went without a point. In St. Louis, Sanderson recovered for one of the best seasons of his career, scoring 24 and assisting on 43 for 67 points in 65 games.
Between 1965-66 and 1977-78, Derek Sanderson played 598 regular season and 56 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks and Pittsburgh Penguins. He was a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Bruins.
