What was once an NHL record of 55 assists in a single season, now places Ted Lindsay tied for 637th all-time. Terrible Ted put up that helper total in both the 1949-50 and 1956-57 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings.

In 1958-59, Ted Lindsay not only got his offensive numbers up to his career norms with the Chicago Blackhawks, he had a career high of 184 penalty minutes. He led the league in that category with a 35 minute edge over second place Lou Fontinato of the New York Rangers. He also helped the young Hawks team to just their second visit to the post season since the 1945-46 season.

In a February 22, 1959 game at home against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Ted stayed out of the box and powered the Blackhawks to a 5-1 win. He scored three of his team’s five goals, all assisted by Ed Litzenberger. Ed Chadwick was in the nets for the Maple Leafs.

For Lindsay, the numbers would drop off fast in 1959-60 and after being swept by the Montreal Canadiens in the semi-final, Ted called it a career. However, he would make a one year comeback in 1964-65 with the Detroit Red Wings.

Between 1944-45 and 1964-65, Ted Lindsay appeared in 1,068 regular season and 133 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks. He was a four time Stanley Cup champion with Detroit and won the Art Ross Trophy in 1949-50. Ted’s number 7 was retired by the Wings in 1991 and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966.
