Card Notes

Audio Version:

No one in history ever got a bigger rookie buildup than Bobby Orr. And, he lived up to it, winning the rookie of the year award in 1966-67 and the Norris Trophy (best defenseman) last season.

Details

A second year player winning the Norris Trophy despite missing 28 games pretty much says it all about Bobby Orr. 1967-68 was the first of eight consecutive Norris wins for Bobby and he would go on to do things that were inconceivable at the time this hockey card came out.

Even though he played just 46 of Boston’s 74 games in 1967-68, the 19 year old Orr had a comfortable lead in Norris voting over the likes of J.C. Tremblay, Tim Horton and Jim Neilson. He even got some consideration for the Hart Trophy, finishing fourth in voting behind Stan Mikita, Jean Beliveau and Bobby Hull.

Two years later, he became the first defenseman to lead the league in scoring, earning the Art Ross Trophy. The hardware didn’t stop there in 1969-70. Orr also won the Norris Trophy, Hart Trophy and Conn Smythe Trophy along with being selected as a First Team All-Star. Of course, he also helped the Bruins win their first Stanley Cup championship since the 1940-41 season.

Between 1966-67 and 1978-79, Bobby Orr appeared in 657 regular season and 74 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979.
