Bernie scored a goal and an assist in his 4th NHL game. In his 5th game he topped that performance with a “hat trick”. He led Blues’ club with 20.9 Scoring Percentage as a rookie in 1976-77.

Bernie Federko’s fourth game in the National Hockey League came on February 3, 1977 at the Boston Garden. His St. Louis Blues lost to the Boston Bruins 5-4 with Bernie scoring his first NHL goal at 1:28 of the first period on goalie Gerry Cheevers, assisted by Rick Bourbonnais and Brian Sutter. He then assisted on a third period goal by Ted Irvine for his first NHL assist.

Two nights later, the Blues were at home against the Buffalo Sabres. Federko scored goals number 2, 3 and 4 for the hat trick. Both were scored on Buffalo goalie Gerry Desjardins. St. Louis went into the third period down 5-4. Bernie scored powerplay goals at 2:31 and 13:51 to give the Blues a 6-5 victory.

The youngster wasn’t done. Bernie recorded two more hat tricks before the 1976-77 NHL season was over. He scored three two weeks later in a 4-1 win over the Washington Capitals. On April 2, 1977, he scored three in a 9-2 beating of the Cleveland Barons. The nine goals over three games accounted for most of his 14 goals that season while playing 31 games.

Between 1976-77 and 1989-90, Bernie Federko appeared in 1,000 regular season and 91 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Blues and Detroit Red Wings. He topped the 100 point plateau on four occasions and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002.
