En Français
C’est la troisième fois que Wayne est mis à l’essai par Boston et il semble bien que, cette année, il restera dans la LHN. Il connut une bonne saison avec San Francisco de la LHW l’an passé; il compta 45 buts et récolta 41 assistances.
Details
Wayne Connelly did stick with the Boston Bruins in 1966-67, playing 64 of the team’s 70 games and leaving the minors behind. However, his time with the Bruins was up at the end of the season with NHL expansion. Connelly was the seventh player picked by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft.
Wayne led the California Seals in 1965-66 with his 45 goals, 41 assists and 86 points. He was one goal behind WHL leader Cliff Schmautz and placed fifth in overall scoring. In his first of three years with the Seals, 1963-64, he helped the team to a championship.
Arriving in Minnesota for the 1967-68 NHL season brought Connelly a career year. He scored 35 goals, tying him for fourth in the NHL with Phil Esposito and Norm Ullman. Wayne led the NHL with 14 power play goals and eight game winners. In the post season, he scored an additional eight goals in the post season.
Included in his 35 goals were a pair of hat tricks, one against the Philadelphia Flyers and one against the Montreal Canadiens. We take a closer look at the Montreal game at our Hockey History Hub website. In that match, he scored all three in a 3-2 win.
Between 1960-61 and 1971-72, Wayne Connelly played 543 regular season and 24 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins, Minnesota North Stars, Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks. He surpassed the 20 goal plateau twice and had a career best 59 points with the Red Wings in 1969-70.
In the WHA, Connelly played an additional 366 regular season and 37 playoff games between 1972-73 and 1976-77 with the Minnesota Fighting Saints, Cleveland Crusaders, Calgary Cowboys and Edmonton Oilers. He had two 40+ goal seasons, topping out with 42 in 1973-74 with the Fighting Saints.
