Terry Sawchuk was a four time winner of the Vezina Trophy with his final win coming in 1964-65 as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He shared the award that year with Johnny Bower. He was also the Calder Trophy winner in 1950-51 with the Red Wings. That year, he had 11 shutouts and a 1.99 goals against average while playing in all of Detroit’s 70 games.
The French snippet on the back of this 1968-69 O-Pee-Chee hockey card adds a bit more info that the English version. It states that Sawchuk was not only rookie of the year in the NHL but also the USHL and the AHL. He was top rookie in the USHL in 1947-48 with the Omaha Knights. In 1948-49, he won the Dudley Red Garrett Award in the AHL with the Indianapolis Capitals.
1968-69 was the beginning of a quick end to Terry’s NHL career. He appeared in just 13 games for Detroit with Roy Edwards and Roger Crozier seeing the bulk of action. The following year would turn out to be his last. In 1969-70, Sawchuk played just eight games for the New York Rangers. He passed away on May 31, 1970.
Between 1949-50 and 1969-70, Terry Sawchuk played in 971 regular season and 106 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers. He holds an unbreakable NHL record with 172 career ties. Terry was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame posthumously in 1971.
