Details

Terry O’Reilly led the Boston Bruins with 61 assists and 90 points in 1977-78, as well as leading the club with 211 penalty minutes. Peter McNab led Boston in goal scoring with 41. The point count placed him seventh in the race for the Art Ross Trophy, a single point behind Mike Bossy and a single point ahead of both Gilbert Perreault and Bobby Clarke.

It was the third time that a Boston player led the team in both points and penalty minutes. You have to go way back to find the other two. In 1933-34, Nels Stewart tied for the team lead in points with Marty Barry and outright led the club in penalty minutes. In the franchise’s first year in the NHL, 1924-25, Jimmy Herberts led in both categories.

In 1979-80, O’Reilly’s offensive numbers took a drop but Terry could still do what he was known for. On March 23, 1980 in a 7-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers at Boston Garden, O’Reilly had fights with Jack McIlhargey and Mel Bridgman, accumulating a total of 16 penalty minutes in the game. Terry also opened the scoring for Boston in the game with his 18th of the season, assisted by Rick Middleton and Brad Park while assisting on goals by Middleton and Peter McNab for an over-the-top Gordie Howe Hat Trick.

O’Reilly was a first round pick by the Bruins at the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft after a junior career with the Oshawa Generals. Between 1971-72 and 1984-85, he played in 891 regular season and 108 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with Boston. His number 24 was retired by the team in 2002.
