Details

On April 2, 1969, the Los Angeles Kings visited the Oakland Seals for game 1 of their quarter-final series. Gene Ubriaco tied the game late in the third at 4-4 and overtime was needed to determine an outcome. Ted Irvine scored just 19 seconds into the first extra period on Oakland goalie Gary Smith, assisted by Jimmy Peters.

That did stand as the NHL record for the fastest overtime goal until 1972. The record now belongs to Brian Skrudland of the Montreal Canadiens when he scored just nine seconds into game 2 of the 1985-86 Stanley Cup final series on Calgary Flames goalie Mike Vernon.

The Kings would end up winning that series in seven games before being swept in the next round by the St. Louis Blues. It was the first time Los Angeles had won a playoff series over their franchise history.

On February 28, 1970, Irvine was traded to the New York Rangers for Real Lemieux and Juha Widing. His career best season offensively came with the Blue Shirts in 1973-74 when he scored 26 goals and totaled 46 points.

Between 1963-64 and 1976-77, Ted Irvine played 724 regular season and 83 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues. He is a member of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.
