Card Notes
“Moose” has the size and weight to make it bit in the NHL. “All he needs is confidence,” his coaches have said. That will come with time. He’s an all-around sports fan, and is noted for scoring clutch goals. Originally a Boston product.
Details
To say Ted Irvine was noted for scoring clutch goals was pretty accurate. During the 1968-69 NHL season, he carried the Los Angeles Kings on his shoulders in a March 18, 1969 home game against the Oakland Seals. Irvine scored the first three goals of the game and that was all the Kings needed in a 3-2 win.
In the opening round of the playoffs, again against the Seals, Ted came through in game one with the overtime winner to give L.A. the series lead. The Kings held a 4-3 lead late in the game but Gene Ubriaco scored for Oakland at 17:22 of the third to tie the match. Irvine acted fast in overtime, scoring Gary Smith just 19 seconds in for the win. The Kings would go on to win the series in seven games before being swept by the St. Louis Blues.
For Irvine, his time on the west coast came to an end during the 1969-70 NHL season. On February 28, 1970, Irvine was traded to the New York Rangers for Real Lemieux and Juha Widing. Although he didn’t score a goal for the Rangers in 16 games that year, in his first full season with the club, 1970-71, he reached the 20 goal plateau for the first of two times during his NHL career.
Between 1963-64 and 1976-77, Ted Irvine played 724 regular season and 83 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues. Ted is a member of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.
