Details
Stan Mikita did win the Art Ross Trophy four times. He took home the scoring leader hardware in 1963-64, 1964-65, 1966-67 and 1967-68. He was a ‘Triple Crown’ winner in 1966-67 and 1967-68, also awarded the Lady Byng Trophy and Hart Memorial Trophy in both those seasons.
In 1972-73, Mikita had 83 points on 27 goals and 56 assists over just 57 games. This put him on pace for a 110 point season. This total would not have earned him another Art Ross Trophy. However, it would have placed him a solid second behind NHL leader Phil Esposito of the Boston Bruins. Espo finished with 130 points.
He came strong out of the games with eight points in his first three games in 1972-73, including a four point game against the Atlanta Flames on October 11, 1972 at Chicago Stadium. He was in on all Chicago goals in a 4-1 win. His first goal held on as the game winner and Mikita had helpers on markers by Bill White and Cliff Koroll.
Despite missing so much action during the regular season, Stan returned for the playoffs and was simply on fire. In the opening game, he had five assists in a 7-1 win over the St. Louis Blues. Despite ultimately losing to the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup final, Mikita produced 20 points in 15 games for the Blackhawks.
Between 1958-59 and 1979-80, Stan Mikita played 1,394 regular season and 155 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Chicago Blackhawks. The four-time Art Ross Trophy winner helped the Blackhawks to a Stanley Cup championship in 1960-61 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983.
