Details

It’s interesting that Stan Jonathan’s junior club is referred to as the Peterborough TPT’s in the info snippet on the back of this 1977-78 O-Pee-Chee hockey card. The TPT’s became the Petes for the 1966-67 OHA Junior A season. However, despite the name change, the team used the old TPT (Toronto- Peterborough Transport) logo until the end of the 1973-74 season.

If that wasn’t misinformation enough, O-Pee-Chee made a bit of an error in that Jonathan played three seasons with the Petes, not two. As a rookie in 1972-73, Stan put up a respectable 14 goals and 49 points over 63 games. His three years with the club were spent under head coach Roger Neilson.

It was pretty noble of OPC to include the extra trivia snippet about Jonathan playing for the Dayton Gems in the IHL for most of the 1975-76 season. As a rookie with the Gems, Stan scored 26 goals and assisted on 47 for 73 points over 69 regular season games. He added 13 goals and 21 points over 15 playoff games.

Dayton finished first overall in the regular season and won the Turner Cup, taking out the Port Huron Flags in the final. Stan tied for tenth in assists and was named a First Team All-Star.

Jonathan was taken 86th overall by Boston in the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft. He was also selected by the Indianapolis Racers in the eighth round of the 1975 WHA Amateur Draft, 103rd overall. After his year in Dayton, Stan was a regular in the National Hockey League between 1976-77 and 1982-83, appearing in 411 regular season and 63 playoff games with the Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins.
