Card Notes

Long predicted stardom for this handsome right winger finally arrived last season, as he finished fifth in NHL soring with 77 points. Two back operations haven’t detoured him in his quest of the top.

En Français

Rodrigue devint finalement une étoile l’an passé alors qu’il se classa en cinquième position des compteurs de la LNH avec 77 points. Deux opérations au dos ne l’ont pas empêché de parvenir au sommet.

Details

Despite missing several games in 1968-69 due to injury, Rod Gilbert equaled his 77 point output from the previous season. He was a single point behind Jean Ratelle for the Rangers team lead but, in a higher scoring NHL, he was just outside the top 10 in the league.

Gilbert would reach a career high of 97 points twice, in 1971-72 and 1974-75. In 1971-72, he placed fifth in the league and third on the Rangers. His career high 43 goals tied him for seventh with Frank Mahovlich of the Montreal Canadiens. In 1974-75, he finished eighth in the league, a single point ahead of Gilbert Perreault of the Buffalo Sabres.

In 1967-68, Rod had a pair of four point games and one with five. That performance was on February 24, 1968 at the Montreal Forum when he scored four goals and assisted on Jean Ratelle goal in a 6-1 win over the Canadiens. Gilbert pounded Montreal goalie Rogie Vachon with 16 shots.

Between 1960-61 and 1977-78, Rod Gilbert played 1,065 regular season and 79 playoff games in the National Hockey League all with the New York Rangers. Rod was the Bill Masterton Trophy winner in 1975-76. He was third in voting for the Lady Byng Trophy in 1967-68 behind Stan Mikita and John Bucyk. Gilbert was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982.
