By the numbers, Rod Gilbert’s rookie 1962-63 NHL season with the New York Rangers wasn’t that disappointing. He scored eleven and assisted on 20 for 31 points, pretty good stats for a first year player in that era.

Gilbert more than doubled up on those numbers in his second full season with 24 goals and 40 assists for 64 points, putting him a single point behind Rangers team leader Phil Goyette. This also placed him ninth overall in the NHL, 25 behind Art Ross Trophy winner Stan Mikita of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Rod would have a career high 43 goals in 1971-72, tying him with Frank Mahovlich for seventh in the league. He would top out with 97 points on two occasions, 1971-72 and 1974-75. He finished his career with 406 goals and 1,021 points.

Between 1960-61 and 1977-78, Rod Gilbert appeared in 1,065 regular season and 79 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the New York Rangers. He helped the team reach the Stanley Cup final in 1971-72 before bowing out to the Boston Bruins. His jersey number 7 was retired by the Blue Shirts in 1979 and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982.
