Robbie Ftorek spent the entire 1971-72 hockey season playing for the U.S. National program. He appeared in six games for the U.S.A. at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan, contributing two assists. The Americans had incredible success in what is dubbed “The Forgotten Miracle”, grabbing a Silver Medal while the Soviets took gold and Czechoslovakia went home with bronze.

The performance with the national team caught the attention of the Detroit Red Wings and Ftorek was signed as a free agent. However, Robbie would play just 15 games with the Wings over two seasons before jumping to the WHA.

One of the top players in the history of the World Hockey Association, Ftorek had four consecutive seasons surpassing the 100 point plateau. He topped out with 117 points in 1976-77 as a member of the Phoenix Roadrunners and 59 goals the following campaign with the Cincinnati Stingers.

Ftorek would never regain that scoring touch after rejoining the NHL for the 1979-80 season. His best year was with the Quebec Nordiques in 1980-81, scoring 24 goals and totaling 73 points. He was traded to the Rangers on December 30, 1981 for Jere Gillis and Pat Hickey. He was done in the NHL by the end of the 1984-85 season.

Between 1972-73 and 1984-85, Robbie Ftorek appeared in 334 regular season and 19 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Red Wings, Nordiques and Rangers. He also played 373 regular season and 13 playoff games in the WHA between 1974-75 and 1978-79 with the Roadrunners and Stingers.
