Details

It was status quo for Mike Bossy during the 1982-83 season. He scored 60 goals, topping the plateau for the third consecutive season. Of those 60, four were part of hat tricks. He did not score more than three goals in a single game in 1982-83. He would have one more 60 goal season, 1985-86 when he scored 61 for the New York Islanders.

With the Laval National in the QMJHL, Bossy scored no less than 70 goals per campaign from 1973-74 to 1976-77. He topped out with 84 in 1974-75 which tied him for first in the league with Norm Dupont. His 149 points placed him fourth, nine points behind the leader Dupont.

The 1974-75 season was a bit odd for the National. The team finished fifth in the five team West Division with just 26 wins and 59 points over 72 games. Yet, the team reached the final before losing out to the Sherbrooke Castors.

Despite his success in the QMJHL, Mike was selected 15th overall by the Islanders at the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft. 15th is quite an honour but in hindsight it’s hard to believe 14 teams passed him over. Dale McCourt was the first overall pick in the draft, going to the Detroit Red Wings from the St. Catharines Fincups. McCourt would play 532 regular season games over his NHL career, scoring 194 goals, far less than Bossy.

Between 1977-78 and 1986-87, Mike Bossy appeared in 752 regular season and 129 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Islanders. He won four Stanley Cup championships with the club and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991.
