Card Notes

Speed is what Rene has plenty of and he’s one of the toughest men to catch in the NHL. He split last season between Pittsburgh and Buffalo, and six of his 13 goals came on the power play. He once held the scoring record in the Quebec Junior League with a fantastic 69 goals in 49 games.

Details

After three NHL teams in his first two seasons, Rene Robert finally settled in with the Buffalo Sabres. This is the rookie card of a player that would certainly make his mark in Upstate New York as part of the ‘French Connection’ line.

As for his 69 game season in junior, that performance came in 1967-68 with the Trois Rivieres Leafs of the QJHL (predecessor to the QMJHL). He also added 74 assists for a whopping 143 points.

He led the league in goals that year but did not take the overall scoring title. Michel Briere of the Shawinigan Falls Bruins led the league with 159 points. However, Robert was named First Team All-Star at centre while Briere was relegated to Second Team honours.

Rene did establish himself as a force on the power play in the National Hockey League. Over his 744 game career that lasted from 1970-71 to 1981-82, he scored 284 goals, 73 of which were with the man advantage.
