Details
Interestingly, Gus Bodnar’s Toronto rookie record would fall in 1982-83 with Peter Ihnacak totaling 66 points. However, Bodnar did it in the days of a 50 game schedule while Ihnacak had the benefit of 80 games. Since, Auston Matthews topped the mark in 2016-17 with 69 points over 82 games.
As for Rene Robert, the 55 games he played for the Maple Leafs in 1981-82 would be the last in his NHL career. As the front of the card notes, Robert was released by the Buds in November after not playing for the club to start 1982-83. He would not be picked up by another NHL club.
Undrafted after playing junior hockey in Trois Rivieres, Quebec, Rene played for four minor league teams in three leagues before getting his start with Toronto in 1970-71. He would play just five games for the Buds in his first turn with the team. The following year, he split time between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres. He was traded between the two for Eddie Shack.
In his seven full seasons with Buffalo, Robert scored no less than 21 goals. In both 1972-73 and 1974-75, he scored 40. In that 1974-75 season, Rene reached the 100 point plateau for the only time in his career, contributing exactly 100. He led the team in scoring that year, edging out French Connection linemates Gilbert Perreault and Rick Martin. He was seventh in the race for the Art Ross Trophy, 35 points behind leader Bobby Orr.
Between 1971-72 and 1981-82, Rene Robert appeared in 744 regular season and 50 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins, Buffalo Sabres and Colorado Rockies. His jersey number 14 was retired by the Sabres in 1995.
