Details
On November 27, 1967, Red Berenson was traded from the New York Rangers to the St. Louis Blues with Barclay Plager for Ron Stewart and Ron Attwell. The trade was a game-changer for Berenson. In 185 regular season NHL games with the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers between 1961-62 and November 27, 1967, Red scored just 16 goals. In 55 games with the Blues in 1967-68, he scored 22.
Following the trade, Berenson responded with a four game point streak with his new team. His best game in that first year was a four point performance in a 4-1 home win over the Oakland Seals. Before the game was five minutes old, Red had two goals, the second holding on as the game winner. He also assisted on a shorthanded goal by Gary Sabourin and the eighth of the year for Jim Roberts.
In the post season, Berenson scored a shorthanded goal late in the third period of game 3 in the final series against the Montreal Canadiens. It was his second of the game, scored unassisted with less than three minutes left on the clock to force overtime. Unfortunately, just 1:13 into the first extra period, Bobby Rousseau scored for the Habs to give Montreal the win and a 3-0 series lead.
Berenson’s claim to fame came early in the 1968-69 NHL season when he scored six goals in an 8-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers at the Spectrum. On November 7, 1968, Red scored the first five goals of the game and the last while also adding an assist on a Camille Henry goal for a seven point game. Doug Favell was in net for the Flyers while Jacques Plante turned away 26 shots for shutout win.
Between 1961-62 and 1977-78, Red Berenson played 987 regular season and 85 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues and Detroit Red Wings. He was awarded the Jack Adams Award in 1980-81 as NHL coach of the year with the Blues. He went on to a legendary career coaching at the University of Michigan.
