Details

Those 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points by Phil Esposito in the 1969-70 Stanley Cup playoffs were put up in just 14 games. He led the Boston Bruins with a seven point edge over Bobby Orr. However, it was Orr that was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

In that 1970 post season, Phil had points in every game except game 2 of the opening round, a 5-3 win over the New York Rangers. Esposito got the Bruins off to a quick start in game 1 with three goals and an assist for four points while also receiving a fighting major for a dust-up with Jack Egers. He led with eight shots on net while Bobby Orr was responsible for the game winner. Orr and Derek Sanderson both scored on the same penalty kill with Don Marcotte in the penalty box.

Of course, Esposito would explode for 152 points in 1970-71 with 76 goals and 76 assists. He had points in 68 of 78 games and led the league with 550 shots on net. Phil had seven hat tricks and 16 game winning goals. Still, he couldn’t help the Bruins get past the Montreal Canadiens in the opening round of the playoffs, despite contributing ten points in seven games.

Between 1963-64 and 1980-81, Phil Esposito played 1,282 regular season and 130 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins and New York Rangers. The two-time Stanley Cup champion won the Art Ross Trophy five times and the Hart twice. Esposito was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984.
