Details
For the 1969-70 NHL season, it may have seemed that Phil’s numbers from 1968-69 were just a one-off and would never be equaled. His point total dropped to 99 and his goal scoring dropped to just 43. However, his teammate Bobby Orr was doing a little rewriting of the record books in his place. Orr, didn’t beat Esposito’s record of 126 points but his 120 as a defenseman were simply unheard of.
But, the 1970-71 season came along and Phil Esposito blew away the standards again with his 76 goals and 152 points. These numbers were then thought to be unbeatable until a lad from Brantford came along named Wayne Gretzky.
What was an amazing performance in 1969-70 was Phil’s 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points in just 14 playoff games. That helped the Boston Bruins win their first Stanley Cup championship since the 1940-41 NHL season.
Esposito finished up his Hockey Hall of Fame National Hockey League career with 717 regular season goals. That number still places him seventh overall in NHL history.
