Card Notes
Age means nothing to Bobby Orr. He’s already the NHL’s “Mr. Everything,” and has won more trophies in three seasons than most players manage in a career. He scores like a forward and has been able to rebound from injuries.
Details
As flattering as the comments were on the back of this 1969-70 O-Pee-Chee Bobby Orr hockey card, what Orr had done in his NHL career to that point was nothing compared to what he would do starting with the 1969-70 National Hockey League season.
In 69-70, Bobby nearly doubled his point total from 64 to 120. It was enough to capture the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s top scorer, the first time a defenseman won the award. In fact, he remains the only blue liner to lead the NHL in scoring. He would do it again in 1974-75 with 135 points.
Included in his 120 points in 1969-70 was a five assist game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on December 20, 1969 at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena. In the 6-4 win, Orr assisted on a pair by John Bucyk and singles by Phil Esposito, John McKenzie and Don Awrey.
In that season, Bobby recorded three Gordie Howe Hat Tricks. His GHHT on Christmas Day in 7-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings was unique. After a scoreless first period, Boston jumped all over the Kings early in the second with Derek Sanderson scoring 36 seconds in and Phil Esposito following up at 1:27. Orr made it 3-0 at 4:13, scoring shorthanded with help from Sanderson and Ed Westfall.
Just over a minute later, Bobby and Bill Flett both went off with roughing minors. 13 seconds after the pair left the box, they dropped the gloves. Both received fighting majors and Orr took an extra minor for high sticking. His assist to complete the GHHT came later in the period on a goal by Bucyk.
He more than doubled his NHL hardware in 1969-70. Prior to the release of this hockey card, Orr had won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year and twice the Norris Trophy as top defenseman. In 69-70, he would win the Norris and Art Ross, along with the Hart Trophy as MVP and Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. He helped the Boston Bruins to their first Stanley Cup championship since 1940-41.
