Peter Mahovlich definitely had the numbers of an outstanding playmaker. His 82 assists with the Montreal Canadiens in 1974-75 stands as the 55th best helper total in NHL history. Considering 14 of the 54 positions ahead of him belong to Wayne Gretzky, it’s a pretty noble mark.

That 1974-75 NHL season was one of two with Mahovlich recording over 100 points. His 117 points placed him fifth in the race for the Art Ross Trophy, behind Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Marcel Dionne and Guy Lafleur. The following season, he totaled 105 points and tied for sixth with Jean Ratelle.

Mahovlich played 884 regular season and 88 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1965-66 and 1980-81 with the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins. Pete appeared in seven of eight games for Team Canada at the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union.
