Details

Pete Stemkowski showed his ability to produce to the limit in the playoffs in 1966-67 with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The unsung hero of the team’s championship run, Pete scored five goals and assisted on seven for 12 points in 12 games. He was second in scoring for the Maple Leafs in the post season, three points behind team leader Jim Pappin.

In that Stanley Cup championship run, two of Stemkowski’s five goals were game winners, one in the semi-final against Chicago and one in the final against Montreal. In the Cup clinching game 6 of the final, Pete assisted on Pappin’s game and series winning goal scored on Habs goalie Gump Worsley.

With the Rangers in 1973-74, Stemkowski had six goals and six assists for 12 points over 13 games in the playoffs. Nine of the 12 points came over six games in New York’s opening round win over the Montreal Canadiens. In game 5, he assisted on the Ron Harris overtime winner. In the series clinching game 6, Stemkowski scored a pair of goals, both empty-netters in the final minute of the game.

Between 1963-64 and 1977-78, Pete Stemkowski played 967 regular season and 83 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings. He topped the 20 goal plateau five times during his NHL career.
