Details
Pete Stemkowski’s overtime goal at 1:29 of the third overtime period in a game 6 3-2 win on April 29, 1971 now ranks as the third longest game in New York Rangers history. It is the second longest in the “modern era”.
On March 26, 1932, Fred Cook scored at 19:32 of the third overtime in a game against the Montreal Canadiens. More recently, on May 2, 2012, Marian Gaborik scored at 14:41 of the third overtime to give the Rangers a 2-1 win over the Washington Capitals.
For Stemkowski, the two overtime game winners in that semi-final series against the Chicago Blackhawks were his only career OT goals. In game 1 on April 18 at Chicago Stadium, Pete scored on Tony Esposito 1:37 into overtime after Jean Ratelle tied the score at 1-1 late in the third.
Going into game 6, the Rangers were down 3-2 in the series. The Blackhawks jumped to a 2-0 lead before Rod Gilbert and Jean Ratelle tied the score and forced overtime. Stemkowski scored the game winner on his eighth shot of the game, assisted by Ted Irvine and Tim Horton. Esposito turned away 46 of 49 shots while Ed Giacomin faced just 26 shots in the win.
In 1971-72, Pete played only 59 regular season games for the Rangers and produced just eleven goals. However, when it came to the post season, he had 12 points in 16 games with New York reaching the Stanley Cup final before falling to the Boston Bruins. He didn’t have a chance to score again in overtime with the Rangers going the 16 games without needed extra time.
Stemkowski had one game winner, in game 4 of the opening round of the quarter-final against the Montreal Canadiens. In a 6-4 win on April 9, 1972 at the Montreal Forum, Pete scored unassisted on Ken Dryden at 14:55 of the third to break a 4-4 tie. He also had an assist on a Vic Hadfield goal for a two point game.
Between 1963-64 and 1977-78, Pete Stemkowski played 967 regular season and 73 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings. He won a Stanley Cup championship with the Maple Leafs in 1967.
