Details

Pete Mahovlich did not land a permanent job with the Detroit Red Wings in 1968-69. The younger brother of established NHL star Frank Mahovlich appeared in just 30 games for the Wings, spending much of his time in the CHL with the Fort Worth Wings. Those 30 games were the last he would play in Detroit.

In the off-season prior to the 1969-70 NHL season, Mahovlich was traded to the Montreal Canadiens with Bart Crashley for Garry Monahan and Doug Piper. Although that first season was split between the Habs and the AHL’s Nova Scotia Voyageurs, it was with Montreal that Pete’s career took off.

In his first two seasons with the Canadiens, Pete scored 35 goals in each. Over his career, he would surpass the 30 goal plateau five times. His performance in those two campaigns cemented his spot on Team Canada for the 1972 Summit Series. Mahovlich played in seven of the eight games over the series against the Soviet Union.

On February 25, 1971, Pete teamed up with brother Frank to beat the Los Angeles Kings. The Habs won the game 5-3 with Pete getting the hat trick, including the game winner, while Frank had an empty-netter to seal the deal with help from Jean Beliveau.

In that first full season with Montreal, Mahovlich didn’t just provide offense. Pete sat 181 minutes in penalties, good for fourth in the NHL. On January 17, 1971, the Habs were visiting the upstart Buffalo Sabres. Pete scored one and assisted on a Phil Roberto goal while also dropping the gloves with Reg Fleming for the Gordie Howe Hat Trick in a 4-4 tie. Joe Daley was in net for Buffalo.

Between 1965-66 and 1980-81, Peter Mahovlich appeared in 884 regular season and 88 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Red Wings, Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins. He was part of four Stanley Cup championship teams in Montreal and topped the 100 point plateau on two occasions.
