What’s interesting about the back of the 1968-69 O-Pee-Chee Paul Henderson hockey card is that the French section contains an additional and significant piece of information. It recalls a four-goal game Paul had during the 1966-67 NHL season.

At the time, Henderson was still with the Detroit Red Wings. On October 27, 1966 at Detroit Olympia, he had four goals and an assist for five points in a 5-3 win over the New York Rangers. His one helper was on a Norm Ullman goal. Ullman assisted on three of Henderson’s four goals and the two combined for 13 of the 49 shots put toward New York goalie Ed Giacomin.

On March 3, 1968, 50 games into the 1967-68 NHL season, Henderson was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, along with Doug Barrie, Floyd Smith and Norm Ullman for Carl Brewer, Frank Mahovlich, Pete Stemkowski and Garry Unger. 1968-69 was his first full season with Toronto and he responded 27 goals, a career high to that point.

A clutch goal-scorer, five of his 27 were game winners and four of those five came in one goal games. The 5 GWG tied for second on the Maple Leafs with Ron Ellis and Mike Walton, one behind leader Dave Keon.

His best game of the 1968-69 season came on Christmas Day, 1968 in a 4-3 win over the Blackhawks at Chicago Stadium. Henderson opened and closed out the scoring in the game, putting his 12th of the year past Denis DeJordy 1:47 into the match and scoring his 13th 11:06 of the third, the game winning goal. Paul also assisted on a Larry Mickey goal in the second for a three-point game.

Between 1962-63 and 1979-80, Paul Henderson played 707 regular season and 56 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs and Atlanta Flames.
