Card Notes
Paul tripled his goal production last year – his second in the NHL. A speedster on right wing, he is already giving indications of proving his 22 goals last year were just a preview of his potential.
En Français
Paul a triplé sa production de buts l’an dernier – sa deuxième saison dans la LHN. Un ailier droit très rapide, il donne déjà des indications que ses 22 buts de l’année dernière étaient seulement un avant-goût de ce qu’il peut faire.
Details
Long before he was the star of the 1972 Summit Series for Canada against the Soviet Union, Paul Henderson was a youngster with the Detroit Red Wings. He played his first game with the Wings in 1962-63 but didn’t become a true regular until 1964-65. His goal total in 1965-66 was up from eight in the previous season.
His time in the Motor City would not last long. Henderson played just 46 games during 1966-67, although putting up pretty great numbers with 21 goals and 19 assists for 40 points. 50 games into the 1967-68 campaign, Paul was shipped to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a blockbuster trade that also saw Norm Ullman, Floyd Smith and Doug Barrie go east to the Buds. Heading to Detroit were Garry Unger, Pete Stemkowski and Frank Mahovlich.
With the Maple Leafs, Henderson had a career year in 1970-71 when he scored 30 goals and assisted on 30 for 60 points. The numbers placed him third on the team in goals and points behind Dave Keon and Norm Ullman.
Between 1962-63 and 1979-80, Henderson played in 707 regular season and 56 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Red Wings, Maple Leafs and Atlanta Flames. His time in Georgia was limited to 30 games during the 1979-80 season.
From 1974-75 to 1978-79, Paul played in the World Hockey Association with the Toronto Toros and Birmingham Bulls. He appeared in 360 regular season WHA games while playing just five games in the playoffs.
