Frank is in his eighth season with the Maple Leafs. Called the “Big M” by the fans, he has scored over 200 goals in NHL competition. He won the Calder Trophy in 1957-58 and has twice been named to the first All-Star team. The 6’1″ left wing came to Toronto from the junior ranks and has never played in the minors.

Mahovlich set a team record with 48 goals in 1960-61.

Frank Mahovlich would go on to score 533 regular season goals in the National Hockey League. That total places him 35th all-time in the NHL. However, Steven Stamkos is knocking at his door and with a healthy 2023-24 season, he will surely surpass the Big M.

In 1957-58, the rookie Mahovlich scored 20 goals for the Maple Leafs while assisting on 16 for 36 points. Frank barely edged out Bobby Hull of the Chicago Blackhawks in voting for Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year. The Big M had 37% of the votes while the Golden Jet had 36%.

Mahovlich was a First Team All-Star in 1960-61 and 1962-63. He was selected for a third and final time in 1972-73 as a member of the Montreal Canadiens. Frank took Second Team honours six times during his NHL career.

The 48 goals that the Big M put up for Toronto in 1960-61 stood as a franchise record for over 20 years. In 1981-82, Rick Vaive topped the mark with 54 goals. The current record holder is Auston Matthews with 60 scored during the 2021-22 campaign. It was not a career best for Mahovlich. In 1968-69, he scored 49 goals as a member of the Detroit Red Wings.

Between 1956-57 and 1973-74, Mahovlich played 1,181 regular season and 137 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens. He also appeared in 237 regular season and nine playoff games in the WHA between 1974-75 and 1977-78 with the Toronto Toros and Birmingham Bulls.
