Card Notes

The little man with wings on his skates is one of the NHL’s most underrated players. He’s a key defensive player and has been in the Maple Leafs chain all the way. Voted playoff MVP when Leafs beat Montreal for the Stanley Cup.

Details

Certainly not the offensive leader for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1966-67 NHL playoffs, Dave Keon was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for his all-around play, grit and leadership. Over 12 post season games, Keon scored three and assisted on five for eight points. The team was led offensively by Jim Pappin with his seven goals and 15 points.

In those 1966-67 playoffs, the Buds met the Chicago Blackhawks in the opening round. In game 2, Keon scored shorthanded in the first period, assisted by George Armstrong, for what would be the game winning goal. He then assisted on Armstrong’s insurance goal in the second period.

In the game five of the final against the Habs, Dave had a goal and assist and the Leafs took the series lead 3-2 with a 4-1 win at the Montreal Forum. Toronto would go on to win the series in six games to take what would be their last Stanley Cup championship.

Between 1960-61 and 1981-82, Dave Keon played 1,296 regular season and 92 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Maple Leafs and Hartford Whalers. He also appeared in 301 regular season and 36 playoff games in the WHA between 1975-76 and 1978-79 with the Minnesota Fighting Saints, Indianapolis Racers and New England Whalers.
