Details
Norm Ullman would continue his streak of 20+ goal seasons into 1968-69, scoring 35 goals for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The run would come to an end in 1969-70 after 12 years with Norm putting up just 18 for the Buds. However, he would regain his scoring touch and top 20 for the following four years.
Ullman came to the Maple Leafs through a March 3, 1968 trade with the Detroit Red Wings. Doug Barrie, Paul Henderson and Floyd Smith joined him while Carl Brewer, Frank Mahovlich, Pete Stemkowski and Garry Unger went in the other direction.
It was no exaggeration that Ullman was a high scorer in the playoffs. Over a four year span from 1962-63 to 1965-66, Norm scored 23 goals and assisted on 35 for 58 points in 44 games for the Red Wings. With Toronto, it was a different story, scoring just three goals over 26 games.
In 1968-69, his first full season with Toronto, Ullman’s 35 goals tied him for seventh in the NHL with Red Berenson, 23 behind leader Bobby Hull. Six of his 35 came in a pair of wins over the New York Rangers, scoring hat trick in each. On December 7, 1968 at Maple Leaf Gardens, Norm scored three on New York goalie Ed Giacomin while also assisting on a Mike Walton goal for four point in a 5-2 win.
Between 1955-56 and 1974-75, Norm Ullman played 1,410 regular season and 106 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. He also appeared in 144 regular season and nine playoff games in the WHA with the Edmonton Oilers to close out his pro career. Ullman was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982.
