Details

Mike Walton’s 28 goals scored in 1971-72 was the third best of his NHL career. He put up a career high of 30 goals in 1967-68 with the Toronto Maple Leafs and scored 29 with the Vancouver Canucks in 1977-78. During his three year stint in the WHA with the Minnesota Fighting Saints, he took his goal-scoring to another level with 57, 48 and 31.

Walton’s numbers in 1972-73 were still impressive. He scored 25 goals but while playing just 56 games for the Boston Bruins. On February 10, 1973 in a 6-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Boston Garden, Mike put up the second of three hat tricks over his NHL career.

In that match, Mike scored a pair of goals in the first two minutes of the game to give the Bruins an early 2-0 lead. Fred Stanfield assisted on both goals. The hat trick goal came at 13:28 of the first period, unassisted. Walton was responsible for eight of the 38 shots put on Pittsburgh goalie Cam Newton. The game featured Gordie Howe Hat Tricks by both Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr.

In 1971-72, Walton had a five point game on January 16, 1972 in a 9-2 home win over the Detroit Red Wings. Mike scored his 13th of the season and assisted on three goals by Derek Sanderson and one by Ed Westfall. The trio of Walton, Sanderson and Westfall combined for 15 points in the game.

Between 1965-66 and 1978-79, Mike Walton played 588 regular season and 47 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks, St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks. Mike also played three years in the WHA between 1973-74 and 1975-76, all with the Minnesota Fighting Saints.
