Card Notes

Quick-skating Freddy bounced around the Chicago system before making it big in Boston. Part of the now-famous Phil Esposito trade. Quiet man, on the ice and off. Fine passer, can also play the power play and kill penalties.

Details

The “now-famous” Phil Esposito trade is known for the explosive success for Esposito. But, overlooked is the success of Fred Stanfield. Over three years with Chicago, he appeared in 107 games, scoring just ten goals and totaling just 22 points. In his first season with the Boston Bruins, he doubled his career goals and tripled his previous career points with 20 goals and 64 points.

Of course, “The Trade” occurred on May 15, 1967 and also involved Ken Hodge going to the Bruins. In the other direction, Boston sent Gilles Marotte, Pit Martin and Jack Norris to the Blackhawks. The deal cemented the Bruins as a legitimate contender in the NHL and by 1969-70 they were Stanley Cup champions.

Stanfield reached the 20 goal plateau in each of his six seasons with Boston. He topped out in 1968-69 with 25 goals and in 1971-72 with 79 points. During that 1968-69 season, Fred was directly involved in a historic night with the Bruins.

On February 8, 1969, the Bruins hosted the Philadelphia Flyers at the Boston Garden. In the first period, there were four Boston goals scoring in a two minute and three second span. The feat ranked as the sixth fastest four goal outburst in NHL history, at the time. Today, it stands as the 39th fastest.

Ken Hodge scored the first of the four at 3:28 of the first period, assisted by Esposito and Rick Smith. Stanfield finished the run off at 5:31 with his 19th of the season, assisted by Tom Webster and John Bucyk. In between, Hodge and Bucyk scored the second and third goals. Fred assisted on Bucyk’s goal. This made the score 4-1 and the Bruins hung on for a 6-5 win. All goals were scored on Bernie Parent.

Between 1964-65 and 1977-78, Fred Stanfield appeared in 914 regular season and 106 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Blackhawks, Bruins, Minnesota North Stars and Buffalo Sabres. Mr. Clean, Stanfield sat just 136 minutes in penalties over his 914 games. He was never awarded the Lady Byng but finished fourth in voting in 1971-72.
