Details
Of course, there’s a rather big ERROR on the front of this 1975-76 O-Pee-Chee Mario Tremblay rookie card. The player pictured is not Tremblay but Gord McTavish. Gord was also a prospect of the Montreal Canadiens, selected in the first round of the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft, 15th overall. McTavish never played for Montreal but did appear in a total of eleven NHL games, one with the St. Louis Blues in 1978-79 and ten with the Winnipeg Jets in 1979-80.
Tremblay scored 21 goals in his rookie 1974-75 NHL season and was ninth on the Montreal Canadiens in that category. Serge Savard rounded out the team’s 20 goal scorers with exactly 20. His 100 point season in junior came in 1973-74 with the Montreal Red White and Blue, scoring 49 goals and assisting on 51 over just 46 games.
His 21 goals in 1974-75 were scored over just 63 games after starting the season in the AHL with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs. In his second NHL game, Tremblay scored a pair for the Habs. On November 16, 1974 at home in a 4-4 tie against the New York Rangers, Mario put two goals past Ed Giacomin, both assisted by Yvon Lambert.
1975-76 would see his goal total drop to eleven over 71 games. Tremblay would eventually rebound and have four seasons with 30 or more goals, topping out with a career high of 33 in 1981-82. That number was aided by his second of three career hat tricks coming against the Hartford Whalers in a 7-2 win on October 15, 1981.
Between 1974-75 and 1985-86, Mario Tremblay played 852 regular season and 101 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Montreal Canadiens. He was a four time Stanley Cup winner with the Habs. He played 56 games during the regular season in 1985-86 but did not appear in the post season when Montreal captured the title, taking out the Calgary Flames in the final.
