Versatile is certainly the proper term to use when it comes to Lou Nanne’s NHL career with the Minnesota North Stars. He started as a defenseman, became a forward during the middle of his career and finished up back on the point.

On the offensive side of things, Nanne had a career best of 21 goals during the 1971-72 season. Three of those came in a game on January 27, 1972 against the Montreal Canadiens. It was Lou’s only NHL hat trick and he added an assist to help the North Stars take out the Habs 6-5 at the Montreal Forum. Lou fired eight shots on Canadiens goalie Phil Myre. Frank Mahovlich equaled Nanne’s scoring numbers while putting ten shots on Minnesota goalie Cesare Maniago.

Lou’s NHL playing career would be done 26 games into the 1977-78 season, playing his final match on February 8, 1978. That game was a 3-0 loss to the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

Between 1967-68 and 1977-78, Lou Nanne played 635 regular season and 32 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Minnesota North Stars. Although from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Lou is best known for his work with the U.S. National Program. He is a member of both the United States Hockey Hall of Fame and the IIHF Hall of Fame.
