Card Notes

Cesare was the first choice of the North Stars when the team was formed back in 1967-68. He’s one of the tallest netminders in the league and makes extra good use of his size to keep pucks out of the net. Cesare has a scrambling type of style but is very effective. Formerly played for Toronto, Montreal and New York before arriving in Minnesota.

Details

Cesare Maniago was the fourth player selected in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft and was the first taken by the Minnesota North Stars. All six teams picked goalies with their first two picks and Minnesota’s second was Garry Bauman. Maniago was the team’s number one goalie from the start while Bauman played just 33 games with the Stars over two seasons before Minnesota brought in Gump Worsley as Cesare’s backup.

Before the North Stars picked him up, Maniago’s pro hockey life was pretty transient. He appeared in seven games for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1960-61, his first NHL action. Two years later, he played his only 14 games with the Montreal Canadiens. Cesare was backup to Ed Giacomin with the Rangers in 1965-66 and 1966-67. Over that time, he played for nine different minor league teams over four leagues.

Between 1960-61 and 1977-78, Cesare Maniago appeared in 568 regular season and 36 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Maple Leafs, Canadiens, Rangers, North Stars and Vancouver Canucks. He spent his final two years in Vancouver after being traded straight up for Gary Smith.
