Details

There is a small, one-letter geographical ERROR on the back of this 1958-59 Topps Lorne Ferguson hockey card. Lorne was born in Palmerston, Ontario and not Palmerstown.

1958-59 was the end of the line for Ferguson’s NHL career before finishing out his days in the minors. He appeared in 67 regular season and six playoff games with the Blackhawks. His final goal was a game winner, scored in game four of the 1959 Stanley Cup semi-final series against the Montreal Canadiens.

Ferguson scored at 13:26 of the third period to break a 1-1 tie that had stood since the first frame. The goal was scored on Montreal goalie Jacques Plante, assisted by Earl Balfour and Dollard St. Laurent. The game ended in a 3-1 win for the Hawks and tied the series at two wins apiece. The Habs came back back and won the next two to advance to the final.

Lorne’s two shorthanded goal game came on February 2, 1957 at Madison Square Garden with his Red Wings beating the Rangers 5-4. The first came at 7:05 of the first period with Ted Lindsay in the box. The second was at 19:46 of the first with Warren Godfrey serving two or less. Both were assisted by Metro Prystai. His third goal of the game, assisted by Alex Delvecchio, was the game winner.

Between 1949-50 and 1958-59, Lorne Ferguson played 422 regular season and 31 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks. His lone 20 goal season was 1954-55 with Boston, scoring exactly 20, good for third on the team behind Leo Labine and Don McKenney.
