Details

Bit of an ERROR: Larry Robinson was not the MVP of the 1976 Stanley Cup playoffs. Robinson was, however, the winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy two years later, 1977-78, when he led the Montreal Canadiens to their third consecutive championship. In 15 post season games that year, Big Bird contributed 21 points from the blue line.

He did total 51 points with the Kitchener Rangers in his only year of major junior hockey, 1970-71. The Habs selected him in the second round of the NHL Amateur Draft in 1971 and spent a year and a half in the AHL with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs before getting his start with the Canadiens.

In 1976-77, Robinson captured his first of two Norris Trophy wins as the NHL’s top defenseman. His 19 goals, 66 assists and 85 points were all career highs. He finished in a three way tie for third spot for assists in the league with Borje Salming and Tim Young. Marcel Dionne was just three assists ahead while leader Guy Lafleur had 80 helpers.

Between 1972-73 and 1991-92, Larry Robinson appeared in 1,384 regular season and 227 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Canadiens and Los Angeles Kings. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1995.
