Details
It’s true, Ken Houston did not register a single point against the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 1978-79 regular season. The Atlanta Flames played the Maple Leafs five times and won four of those games.
Interestingly, the Flames met the Maple Leafs in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. In the best of three series, Houston only played the first game with Toronto sweeping Atlanta in two games. Ken, again, did not register a point.
However, Houston was very involved in a second period brawl between the two teams in game one. Ken picked up a total of 16 penalty minutes, mostly resulting from a misconduct for leaving the bench to join the melee. In all, 224 PIM were handed out in the game. Tiger Williams led the way with 32 for Toronto. Darcy Rota had 26 and Willi Plett had 25 for the Flames.
The Ken Houston Hat Trick
On March 8, 1978, the Atlanta Flames were hosting the Vancouver Canucks at the Omni Coliseum. The game ended in a 8-3 win for the Flames. Houston scored his 17th, 18th and 19th goals of the season, starting at 5:38 of the second period. The first was assisted by Bobby Lalonde and John Gould while both the second and third were assisted by Rey Comeau.
Houston also assisted on a second period goal by John Gould for a four point night. Cesare Maniago was between the pipes for the Canucks for all eight goals. On the season, Ken totaled 22 goals.
