Card Notes
For Jean the 1957-58 season was bitterly disappointing. The records show he dropped below the 30 goal mark for the first time in four seasons, yet his 27 goals scored would certainly have been much greater had he not missed 15 game through injury. He was injured in a collision with Rangers’ Dave Creighton suffering fractured ribs when Creighton’s knees struck him heavily in the chest.
Details
His ‘disappointing’ 27 goals in 1957-58 still placed Jean Beliveau tied for ninth in the NHL with teammate Bernie Geoffrion. He was back in time to contribute 12 points in ten playoff games as the Montreal Canadiens captured their third straight Stanley Cup championship.
Beliveau came back in a big way for the 1958-59 NHL season. He scored 45 goals and had a career high 91 points while still missing six regular season games. He led the NHL in goal scoring with four more than runner-up Dickie Moore. Moore edged him out by five points for the Art Ross Trophy.
The game referred to on the back of this 1958-59 Parkhurst hockey card occurred on December 12, 1957 at the Forum against the New York Rangers. Jean would not return to action until January 16, 1958. In the 3-2 win for the Canadiens over the Rangers, Beliveau went without a point while Geoffrion and Bert Olmstead led the Habs with two each.
Included in his 45 goals in 1958-59 were four hat trick games. One of those was a four goal, three assist, seven point performance against the Detroit Red Wings on March 7, 1959 at the Montreal Forum. In the 10-2 win over the Terry Sawchuk and the Wings, Beliveau had helpers on two goals by Dickie Moore and one by Henri Richard.
Between 1950-51 and 1970-71, Jean Beliveau played 1,125 regular season and 162 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Montreal Canadiens. The ten-time Stanley Cup champion won the Hart Trophy twice, along with winning the Art Ross Trophy and Conn Smythe Trophy once each. Beliveau was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.
