Card Notes

In 69 League games last season, Jean Beliveau won the NHL scoring race. Yet most hockey observers consider this was a poor year for the big centre. His 33 goals and 51 assists for 84 points would normally be accepted as a rather remarkable output, but so much is expected of Beliveau that for him, 84 points is rated as “off year’s” production. This is possibly the easiest way to obtain a true picture of the ability Jean possesses.

Details

Well, if 1956-57 was an off-year, 1957-58 must have been considered an utter disaster. Beliveau played just 55 regular season games, scoring 27 and assisted on 32 for 59 points. However, I do see where they were coming from with the comments – in 1955-56, Jean scored 47 goals and totaled 88 points. Beliveau would, of course, bounce back. In 1958-59, he would have a career high 91 points.

Something people forget about Jean Beliveau is his love of the penalty box in his early years in the NHL. He led the league in goals and points in 1955-56 but he also finished third with 143 penalty minutes. Just Lou Fontinato and Ted Lindsay spent more time in the box.
