Details

It’s always mentioned that Henri Richard followed in his brothers footsteps. However, there wasn’t a whole lot similar to the playing style of Henri’s compared to that of Maurice Richard. In pretty much all of the Rocket’s full seasons in the National Hockey League, his goals outnumbered his assists. Maurice also had a fiery temper that made sure he was quite familiar with the penalty box.

Henri Richard, as noted on the back of this 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee hockey card, was more comfortable setting up goals than scoring them. The Pocket Rocket led the NHL in assists in both 1957-58 and 1962-63. His highest goal total was a modest 30 in 1959-60. Also, not quite a Lady Byng candidate, Henri did his best to stay out of the box.

1973-74 would be the last full season for Richard’s illustrious NHL career. He would play for the Habs in 1974-75 but appeared in just 16 games before retiring. Between 1955-56 and 1974-75, Henri played 1,258 regular season and 180 playoff games in the NHL, all with the Montreal Canadiens.

Richard was a member of eleven Stanley Cup championship teams in Montreal. No other player in NHL history has equaled that mark. His number 16 was retired by the Habs in 1975 and Henri was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979.
