Details

1972-73 would be the final season in the NHL for Harry Howell before jumping to the World Hockey Association. His 73 games with the Los Angeles Kings that year gave him a career total of 1,411. That number today places him 39th all-time, just one ahead of Norm Ullman.

Back in 1966-67, Howell won his only Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman. He was the last player to win the award before Bobby Orr owned it for an eight year stretch. he finished fifth in voting for the Hart Trophy that year, just two votes behind Henri Richard but a lengthy distance behind winner Stan Mikita of the Chicago Blackhawks.

In 1974-75, Harry was the head coach and regular defenseman with the San Diego Mariners in the WHA. He still produced at 42 years old with 14 points in 74 games, typical of his stay-at-home defensive style. The Mariners, led offensively by Andre Lacroix and in net by Ernie Wakely, reached the second round of the Avco World Trophy playoffs before being swept by the Houston Aeros, the Gordie Howe led team that lost just a single game in the post season.

Between 1952-53 and 1972-73, Harry Howell played 1,411 regular season and just 38 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Oakland Seals and Los Angeles Kings. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979 and his jersey number 3 was retired by the Rangers in 2009.
