Details

Harry Howell would last another 28 games with the California Golden Seals in 1970-71 before heading down the coast. On February 5, 1971, he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings for cash. In his final 28 games with the Seals, Harry had zero goals while adding nine assists. In just 18 games with the Kings in 1970-71, the low-scoring defenseman had three goals and eleven points.

His first game with Los Angeles was against his former team at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena. On February 28, 1971, Howell was left off the scoresheet but the Kings certainly were not in an 8-3 win. Los Angeles was led by Ross Lonsberry and Gilles Marotte with two goals apiece while Ralph Backstrom had three points on a goal and two helpers.

His Norris Trophy winning season was certainly a career year for Howell. Harry scored 12 and assisted on 28 for 40 points, career highs in both goals and points. It was a tight battle in voting between Howell and Chicago’s Pierre Pilote. Finishing third was Bobby Orr of the Boston Bruins. Orr would win the award in the following eight seasons.

Between 1952-53 and 1972-73, Harry Howell played 1,411 regular season and 38 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Oakland Seals and Los Angeles Kings. He also appeared in 170 regular season and seven playoff games in the WHA between 1973-74 and 1975-76 with the New York Golden Blades/Jersey Knights, San Diego Mariners and Calgary Cowboys. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979.
