Details

Between March 4, 1978, a 6-3 loss to the New York Islanders, and March 19, 1978, a 9-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks, Greg Malone had assists in nine straight games. In all but one, he had a single helper, going 0-10-10 over the stretch.

Putting up a career high, at the time, of 43 assists (he would beat that total by one in 1982-83), Malone had three games with three assists in 1977-78. His top game offensively came on November 12, 1977 in a 7-4 home win over the Chicago Blackhawks. In that match, he totaled four points on a goal and three helpers, two on Mike Corrigan goals and one on a Wayne Bianchin marker.

In his injury shortened 1979-80 season, Malone showed his tough side in a 5-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on January 19, 1980. Greg scored both Pittsburgh goals, his 12th and 13th of the campaign, and got into a third period fight with Colin Campbell. The game was an outright brawl with a total of 267 minutes in penalties, 51 going to Malone’s teammate Russ Anderson.

Between 1976-77 and 1986-87, Greg Malone played 704 regular season and 20 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hartford Whalers and Quebec Nordiques. He was a 20+ goal scorer on three occasions, putting up a career best 35 with the Penguins in 1978-79.
