Details

Mike Corrigan did more than repeat his first 20-goal season. He totaled 37 for the Los Angeles Kings in 1972-73, a career high. This led the Kings, as did his 146 penalty minutes. He would only surpass the 20 goal plateau one more time during his career with 22 in 1975-76.

Amongst those 37 goals was Corrigan’s only NHL career hat trick. On March 21, 1973 at the L.A. Forum against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Mike scored his 33rd, 34th and 35th of the season in a 5-1 win. His second of the match, scored on Toronto goalie Gord McRae and assisted by Juha Widing and Bob Berry, stood as the game winner. He also assisted on a goal by Berry for a four point game.

This was his second four point game of the season after recording a goal and three assists against the New York Islanders on November 4, 1972. In the 9-2 victory, Ralph Backstrom led the Kings with five points while Butch Goring also had a four point game. The Kings fired 37 shots on former teammate Billy Smith.

Between 1967-68 and 1977-78, Mike Corrigan played 594 regular season and 17 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Los Angeles Kings, Vancouver Canucks and Pittsburgh Penguins. He served as assistant coach for three years with the Penguins in the early 1980’s.
