Details
For Gordie Howe, 1970-71 would be his last season in the NHL before retiring. That is, until he came out of retirement three years later to play seven more full years of major league hockey. Even after crossing the 40 year old line, Howe still produced 23 goals and 29 assists playing 63 games in 1970-71 for the Detroit Red Wings.
Gordie’s final goal with the Detroit Red Wings came in his second last game, Detroit’s 77th in the 78 game 1970-71 schedule. His 23rd of the season was scored at 1:34 of the second period, assisted by Don Luce and Jim Niekamp. It was the lone goal for the Wings in a 4-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks and Howe’s only shot on Tony Esposito.
Between 1946-47 and 1979-80, Gordie Howe played 1,767 regular season and 157 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings and Hartford Whalers. He played an additional 419 regular season and 78 playoff games in the WHA with the Houston Aeros and New England Whalers.
The four-time Stanley Cup and two-time Avco World Trophy champion won the Hart Trophy and Art Ross Trophy six times each. Howe was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.
